September Events

This month there are a couple of notable events happening which I`m looking forward to. On September 13th at 6pm there will be a Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form at St Mary`s Cathedral. (I`ve mentioned it before here.) Last year there was talk of having such a Mass to mark the coming into effect of the Motu Proprio but nothing ever materialised. I`m delighted that it will happen this year and very near to the first anniversary of the date. I am honoured to be the celebrant, Fr Emerson, FSSP, will be the deacon and Fr Phillips of Stella will be the subdeacon. The preacher will be Fr Warrren of the cathedral. The music is being organised by Mike Forbester of the Rudgate Singers. However this Mass would never have happened if it had not been for the work of the MacGregors of the Holy Family Guild: they have organised it to mark the fortieth anniversary of the encyclical Humanae Vitae. There is a dinner organised in the Assembly Rooms afterwards with guest speakers. Today is the last day to get a ticket for the meal (price £25).
The following Saturday, at noon, sees the annual Mass at Brinkburn Priory in Northumberland. It will be special this time as it will be the last time our schola director, Ian Graham, will direct the music as he is moving out of the area with a new job. He will be much missed. The Rudgate Singers will sing the Ordinary.

Ah, the complexities of an Ember Day in the old rite!

There is no Ember Day on 13th or 20th September. Saturday 27th is an Ember day.

Mea culpa, I must be losing the plots as I read 13th as 17th - time to visit the optician!

Saturday 2oth is Ember Saturday is however in the old rite.

Sorry - I disagree. The Ember days in September in the 'old' rite are Wed 24th, Fri 26th, and Sat 27th,

Anonymous,

In the old rite the September Ember days are the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday following the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (c.f. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05399b.htm) so this year are the 17th,19th & 20th September.

I believe you are referring to the days in the 1962 rite which this year fall a week later due to the introduction of a new method of working out the first Sunday of the month.

Its doubtful if I shall be able to spare the time to read the next debate which will surely be the one about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. Pity!

I would have thought a 'sceptical believer' to be a contradiction in terms: if one can say Credo then one is surely not a sceptic? 'scepticalagnostic' would make more sense.

The 1960s were a very confused period, be it for thinking or liturgy. I suggest you avoid the period, get a sense of history, and then you won't have to worry about how you ration your time for hypothetical debates no one has proposed in the first place.

Actually we can cope with a few last minute dinner ticket requests up to 11th September!

Father Brown - The Mass sounds like it will be extra specially beautiful. I wish I could be there...

The Mass should be very special. The cathedral are letting us use their 18th century high Mass set too!

Old Believer might develop his sense of humour and irony a little!

The Old Believer generally thinks in terms of the pre-1962 books. I have a lot of sympathy for this but am rather relieved that September 20th won`t be an Ember day in the 1962 calendar.
