Funeral Mass for victims of Italian earthquake

I was interested to see that, according to the BBC, there will be a requiem Mass celebrated by cardinal Bertone on Good Friday for the victims of the recent earthquake. I don`t ever recall hearing of a Mass being celebrated on Good Friday before.
May they rest in peace.

A special permission from the Pope, according to http://whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com/2009/04/for-laquila-gift-of-oil.html

I'd bet that the Beeb got it wrong, initially saying a "mass funeral" (meaning a funeral for large number), and in the next sentence indicating that the local Ordinary will say the "Mass" instead of the "funeral". It wouldn't be the first time BBC have made a mistake?

From NLM:
It may interest you that the Holy Father, through the Congregation for the Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has granted an indult for the celebration of a Holy Mass for those who have died in the recent earthquakes in the Abruzzo region of Italy tomorrow on Good Friday, making an exception in this special instance from the rule that no Mass may celebrated on Good Friday. As a sign of his personal closeness, the Pope's private secretary Msgr. Georg Gänswein, will also participate at the funeral. The Holy Father also sends part of the Holy Oils consecrated by him this morning to the Archbishop of L'Aquila who due to the damages caused by the earthquake was unable to gather his prebyterium and celebrate the Chrism Mass.
