Let`s hope we see more of this

Damian Thompson has an interesting piece on his blog today about the conference at Merton college, at the end of the month, organised by the Latin Mass Society to help priests learn to celebrate the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Fifty priests will attend, ten more than the organisers planned for and they are young priests for the most part. It is good to see that archbishop Vincent Nichols is to be present and that an American bishop, from Tulsa, Oklahoma will celebrate the closing Mass according to the 1962 missal. Let`s hope that diocesan authorities make opportunities available for priests who want to learn how to celebrate this form of the Roman Rite available in their dioceses rather than just tell them they are not qualified and cannot be judged suitable to take advantage of this opportunity.

Do you not think that priests who already celebrate Mass using the Missal of Blessed John XXIII need to be a bit more pro-active here?

If priests outside that small circle are going to be encouraged to take the plunge they will need both encouragment and training.

I am sure there are even some lay people who would offer any talents and knowledge they have in such a task.

But in dealing with priests is it not essential that priests who know what they are doing take the lead...

Alnwickian, rest assured that I do encourage, and always have encouraged, other priests to consider the advantages of the 1962 Missal. While I would be delighted to offer training to any priest who asks I am not in a position to set myself up as a tutor in an official way. I suppose I could put something in the small ads of the Northern Cross!
My hope is that as bishops see stable communities of the faithful attached to the EF establishing themselves and multiplying as they move around the priests who are committed to it, then they will recognise the need for priests to be familiar with the EF. I would hope that before long training in the EF will be part of the seminary curriculuum and that the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education which oversees the seminaries will be asking bishops at their `ad limina` visits whether this has happened.
