May I mention a bee in my bonnet. I know from talking to a number of laypeople that they do not like, and will not use, face to face confession. Many people are quite happy with this format but, equally, many are not, and it is, perhaps, those in this group that have fallen away from confession. It is the same when arriving for confession to find the priest wandering around until someone turns up and only then going into the confessional. Any desire by the penitent for anonymity is lost. 'Confession by appointment' is another no-go area for many people. Might I suggest that if confessions are announced for a certain time, that priests are actually in the confessional from the start until the end of that time. If the confessional has the facility for private or face to face confessions then we can decide when we enter which to use. I don't think priests understand that many penitents wish for a private and anonymous confession and will not entertain anything but a private box with a grill or curtain that respects this desire. This is not a complaint against priests but a plea for them to understand and respect the desire for many for privacy.
God bless our Bishop! Ad Multos Annos! And I believe ours is the only Cathedral in the country with a regular OF Mass on a Sunday (4th Sunday, 12.15...)
Ben do you mean all the other Masses are EF? That`s quite something! An easy slip to make!
Would that it were so! Alas, a typo. It is the EF that is every 4th Sunday. Still that's better than most English cathedrals can boast, I think!
Well said, Privacy Please. I completely agree.
