Moving Forward Together

On Saturday the latest in the series of consultations of the diocese by the bishop took place at St Robert`s school, Washington. There is a report on the day here. Readers may be interested to look at the topics discussed and see the feedback that came from the meeting. You will find this here, here and here. My favourite suggestion was that we have `locally grown priests`, which I thought was a very odd remark for a number of reasons! Needless to say no-one mentioned the Extraordinary Form ( we are used to that) but there was some discussion about the new translation which didn`t seem hostile at all.

Ah well! Same old thing regurgitated- a bit like the National Pastoral Congress with added Twitter!

I mentioned in of the groups that that too often the mass is like a dreary school assembly, and that naff 70s guitar-based folk hymns are as "old fashioned" as the EF. Some pennies dropped (perhaps more powerful coming from someone relatively young - 30s).

There was the usual vague demands for more "participation" - but pointed out that prayer is more important than just carrying things about in church.

You're right: discussion of new mass translation was very positive - some priests pointed out the excellent teaching opportunity that its implementation presents, and this was well received by laity present who admitted haziness about some of the basics of the current mass!

It is interesting to find in this forum in 2010 the question 'what would help congregations to understand and embrace the New Mass?'

This appears to show a surprising level of awareness of the liturgical and pastoral problems of the Missal of Paul VI - 40 years on.

Thomas More, I know it`s confusing but I think New Mass in this context refers to the new translation of the Ordinary Form. I imagine that for most of the participants the OF is the only Mass they consider when they think of the Mass and that there is probably a case for calling the Extraordinary Form the New Mass!

There was an astonishing lack of awareness about the new translation amongst the laity, not to mention a confusion as to exactly what it was (NOT a new rite), with even the Bishop slipping up on this. That being said most people did see it as a great teaching and spiritual opportunity, particularly if it led to more reverant celebrations.
An admission (with some prompting..) by some groups that in spite of the need for lay formation we still do actually NEED more priests was also welcome. Guess we'll have to wait and see what comes of it all.

Better still to call it 'The Mass' and leave the NO as the 'New Mass'.

Better than describing it as the Old Mass.

Nice to see yet more parish funds been wasted, just how much did the facilitators cost and if the hierarchy are incapable of running their own meeting they have no business been in a leadership position.

From reading the conclusions its nice to see that the same old tired formulas are been turned out that have utterly failed us so far, probably by the same people who have been turning them out for the last few decades judging by the photos of the people in attendance, but then when you only invite the same old people of course you will get the same old answers.

And you will only get old people if you do these things on a week day when everyone who isn't retired is otherwise engaged with trying to make a living.

If the diocese wants to know the opinions of people it would be much cheaper, effective not to mention result in more thoughtful replies if the Bishop through his priests and in person simply encouraged people to write to him with their ideas or even send him an email.

Whilst I agree with Volpius Leonius regarding writing to the bishop, don't you think it a waste as he rarely (if ever) replies.

"Multi-functional communication, hard copies relooking/modernise policies and procedures re communication reps eg up to date list of reps, training of reps."

I kid you not, this is one of about 300 recommendfations emanating from the Washington "Facilitation" meeting.

By the way, what is a "Eucharistic Community"?

David just because he does not reply does not mean he did not read it, and if he read it it was not waste.

I have emailed him and he did reply, it wasn't the reply I was hoping for but he did reply.

Dear Volpius (if I may be permitted to be on first name terms). I too emailed the bishop but still received no reply. As I had suggested the introduction of EF confirmations perhaps I shouldn't be surprised.
