Apparently it was all because he is cross at Marks and Spencer`s! If you haven`t seen The Daily Mail`s surprising take on the whole thing read it here.

It will give a new slant on the popular phrase "any Tom, Dick or Harry" considering the names of the Williamson siblings.
I don't understand the Mail article (only had time to skim over it, though). It says: "Years earlier, in 1988, Richard had been excommunicated from the Catholic church and was thus prevented from taking an active part in his own mother's funeral." --but he was born an Anglican. Did his mother convert, like him?
Martk, that is the ony scenario that makes sense but I wouldn`t trust The Mail to be accurate about this kind of thing. I suppose if she was still an Anglican then he wouldn`t be able to take `an active part` either.
Peter, you call yourself a Catholic and shop there!? They even sell trousers for women which is of course the greatest of all evils according to the SSPX.:)
For the 25th anniversary of the founding of St Michael the Archangel Church in Farmingville, Long Island, New York, Bishop Williamson was on hand for the occasion, offering Mass and delivering a sermon. It was a Sunday, November 1, 2008. Afterwards, the faithful of St Michael's and other guest has a grand dinner-buffet at a local firehouse, with musical performance. The Bishop was visibly delighted with all the children that the families of St Michael are producing. You can access the audio portion of the good Bishop's sermon on CatholicRadio Long Island. Please listen carefully to his sermon. Thank you.
I recall Bishop Willy's newsletters several years back when he asked for people to pray for his mother, who was then in danger of death, to convert to Catholicism (presumably his brand) because otherwise she would go to Hell! Of course his (entirely valid and proper) excommunication would have had nothing to do with whatever he did or did not do at his mother's funeral. Strange, however, for such a (most of the time) traditional Catholic to attend a Protestant funeral, even his mother's, when in times of old (i.e. pre-Vat ll) one was forbidden to attend such events!
Ha! Don't read the Mail much (unless I'm looking for "Queen shakes hands with 2 headed kangaroo" stories) but is "- his views became more extreme and his mannerisms more studied." Britspeak for "queerer than a 3 dollar bill?" He is undeniably very queeny with his misogynistic views!
Paul, thanks for the link. I listened to the sermon. It was his usual stuff but I thought I detected a warmer attitude to the Holy See. He didn`t talk about `the Romans` although he was still quite scathing about the Holy Father.
Gem of the Ocean: the Daily Mail thinks all Catholic Priests are homosexual child-abusers and Vatican spies to boot, so I think your interpretation is entirely correct.

Well, in the case of the Daily Mail, sometimes even a blind groundhog finds an acorn. It would account for a lot, in Williamson's case....
